MHDH is a workshop for separated parents wanting to understand and manage the changes in their family.  It enables parents to share with others what is different now that their family has changed, learn what their children need, how to communicate respectfully with other parents, identify what gets in the way of working with the other parent and understand development needs of children.

This three-hour workshop is for separated or divorced parents. The focus  is on how parents can positively support children through this challenging time. It is not designed for adults to resolve their personal experiences of grief or anger related to the end of their relationship.

Inside Their Heads

Venue: Fennescey House, 33 Wakefield Street, Adelaide

‘Inside Their Heads’ draws on course content for the ‘Inside Her Head’ and ‘Inside His Head’ courses. This program addresses the difficulties in families around adult/teen relationships, and development of self-concept and self-esteem in the pre-teen/teen years. Strong connectivity before and during adolescence is a protective factor against early sexual activity, schooling problems and social challenges.

Strengthening/Developing Resilience

Developing Resilience is a two-hour workshop for parents who are interested in developing their children’s ability to cope with disappointment and bounce back from challenging situations.

Resilience has been described as the ability to bungee jump through life. This session identifies family strengths – both yours and your child’s. Participants look at the characteristics that resilient people use to cope with life’s stresses and challenges. The session identifies a ten-point plan to encourage resilience in families.

How to Talk so Kids Will Listen

Venue: Fennescey House, 33 Wakefield Street, Adelaide

This is a two-hour workshop which can be offered as two discrete sessions for parents of teens and parents of younger children. Both explore the skills associated with successful communication for parents. This includes how we listen, as well as what we say. Both workshops consider the importance of assisting children to develop emotional intelligence as part of successful communication.

Step-Families/Living in a Blended Family

Come along and learn how to:

Live successfully with the common challenges that are faced in step-families. Understand the typical lifecycle stages in a step-family. Negotiate the changing roles for both adults and children.

Research has shown that there was a statistically significant increase in parenting self-efficacy, satisfaction and reflective functioning. Parents also reported an increase in supportive reactions to their children’s negative emotions. This program is consistently reported to be valued by parents who have attended and so it was considered important that Centacare’s parenting education team should offer this program to parents.
